Build Quality and Design

The GEN AIR 40 is a compact box-style All-In-One (AIO) pod system, falling in size between basic pod devices like the Caliburn and larger single-battery kits. It strikes a harmonious balance between size and available power. Weighing in at a mere 67 grams, VAPORESSO proudly touts it as the “lightest 40W pod,” a claim that holds true. Despite its featherlight feel, the device exudes a sense of robust construction and quality, dispelling any notion of cheapness. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident, resulting in a device that feels well-crafted and durable.

The device is available in a spectrum of seven striking colors. The twilight gold variant, which I had the pleasure of reviewing, showcases a captivating gradient design, transitioning from gold at the top to a rich purple hue at the bottom. Similarly, the sakura pink and aurora green models feature gradual color shifts, while the remaining four options are single-colored, providing a more understated appearance. Notably, the front panel and pods are solid black in all variations, while the rest of the device boasts fully colored exteriors, ensuring that each version possesses its own distinctive allure—a departure from many devices in the market that rely solely on different colored panels.

The front of the device houses two buttons: a prominent fire button at the top and a power adjustment button at the bottom. Positioned between these buttons are four LED indicators, serving to display both the battery level and power settings. In essence, the GEN AIR 40 presents itself as a conventional and user-friendly pod system, yet it excels in terms of construction, lightweight design, and overall execution.

Getting Started

The GEN AIR 40 is a straightforward pod system that’s easy to use, even though mine arrived without a manual. It appeared to be an early version packaged in a blank box, and currently, there is no manual available on their website as of the time of this writing. Nevertheless, getting started was a breeze, and I didn’t encounter any issues.

To power the device on or off, simply press the fire button five times. Adjusting the power output is as easy as holding down the power adjustment button, with each press cycling through various power levels. According to their website, the LED indicators correspond to the following power settings:

  • One LED: 3V
  • Two LEDs: 3.2V
  • Three LEDs: 3.4V
  • Four LEDs: 3.6V

With the 0.4-ohm coil, four LEDs equate to 32 watts, an ideal range for that particular coil. The 0.8-ohm coil, on the other hand, allows for a power range of approximately 11 to 16 watts.

Located on the front of the pod is an adjustable airflow feature, which provides a range from a loose Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) draw to a more restricted Direct Lung (DL) vaping experience. The pod is effortlessly removed and inserted into the device, requiring no special maneuvers. To remove the pod, a simple pull does the trick, and to reattach it, the magnets securely lock it in place. The pod’s accessibility is user-friendly, with a red rubber plug becoming visible once the pod is removed, providing access to the fill hole.

Although the pod is mostly exposed, checking the juice levels can be somewhat challenging due to its dark tint. When the juice is running low, you may need to tilt the device to see if any remains at the bottom. While not a major issue, it would be ideal if companies offered clear pods as a standard and provided tinted versions separately for those who prioritize aesthetics over functionality. In sum, the device’s operation is smooth and straightforward, except for the darkly tinted pod.

The GEN AIR 40 is compatible with the reliable GTX line of coils, which I’ve had extensive experience with. However, it’s important to note that not all GTX coils are universally compatible with every device, and this holds true for the GEN AIR 40 as well. Personally, I find this lack of cross-compatibility somewhat inconvenient, and I wish that each coil line seamlessly fit all devices using them. Nevertheless, VAPORESSO’s website does an excellent job of clarifying which coils work with each device.

The GEN AIR 40 currently supports five GTX coils, with two of them included in the package. These are a 0.8-ohm mesh coil rated at 12-16 watts and a 0.4-ohm mesh coil rated at 26-32 watts. The remaining three are available as separate purchases.

In my testing, I began with the 0.8-ohm coil, using 50/50 20-24 mg nicotine salt e-liquids. I found it performed best at low power (one LED), delivering impressive flavor for a pod system and rivaling some of the top pods in the market. Remarkably, I managed to consume approximately 30 mL of e-liquid with this coil, a testament to its longevity. Typically, I expect around 10-15 mL from coils of this type.

Subsequently, I switched to the 0.4-ohm coil and favored high power (four LEDs). This coil offered a solid 30-watt vape, suitable for 70/30 3 mg e-liquids. However, as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews, my personal preference leans towards a minimum of 40 watts for Direct Lung (DL) vaping and below 20 watts for Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) vaping. The 20-40 watt range falls into a bit of a no man’s land for me. Nonetheless, if you enjoy this wattage range, the GEN AIR 40 delivers a decent vaping experience, with the coil exhibiting satisfactory durability at around 50 mL. Overall, the coils perform admirably, but I particularly favor it as an MTL device with the lower-wattage coils and higher nicotine e-liquids.

Battery life and charging

Battery life on the GEN AIR 40 will naturally vary depending on your vaping frequency, but I can attest that when using it with the 0.8-ohm coil on low power, it delivered impressive longevity and should easily last throughout the day for most users. The device is equipped with an internal battery rated at 1800 mAh, with a listed charge rate of 2A. The Type-C port for charging is located at the bottom of the mod, which means the device must be laid down while charging. While not a significant issue, I personally prefer devices that can remain upright during the charging process.

In my testing, I examined the device’s stated specifications. It achieved a maximum charge rate of 1.94A, meeting the high rating provided by the manufacturer. Regarding the charge time, it took 53 minutes to fully charge the device, which is notably fast for a pod system. Most similar pods typically require around 60 to 90 minutes to complete the charging process. As for the battery size, it’s slightly overrated at 1800 mAh, and I consider it to be closer to 1500 mAh. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that most devices are typically rated around 20% higher than the actual capacity. This could be attributed to the manufacturer’s battery rating being slightly higher than the actual capacity, combined with the device’s soft cell cut-off feature that prevents full depletion. Therefore, a 20% overrate is a common practice for most internal battery devices. Additionally, the GEN AIR 40 supports passthrough vaping, temporarily pausing charging while in use.

The LED indicator serves as a battery meter, and VAPORESSO deserves commendation for its implementation. Many reviewers and users often express dissatisfaction with battery meters in such devices, as they typically feature only three steps and uneven spacing. I’ve echoed this sentiment in numerous reviews, suggesting that devices should incorporate four evenly spaced battery level indicators. VAPORESSO listened to this feedback and implemented precisely that in the GEN AIR 40.

Here’s the breakdown of the LED battery meter:

  • One LED: 0-25%
  • Two LEDs: 25-50%
  • Three LEDs: 50-75%
  • Four LEDs: 75-100%

VAPORESSO has done an excellent job by addressing this issue and providing a more user-friendly and informative battery meter in their device. It’s a commendable example of a company actively responding to user feedback and improving their products accordingly.
